About this workshop

A Clinical Introduction to Vagus Nerve and Polyvagal Practices for Trauma

Research on vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) demonstrates its relevance for autonomic regulation. It has been studied in depression, epilepsy, obesity, and migraine headaches. Historically, VNS was delivered through surgically implanted devices. More recently, external transcutaneous stimulation has been developed.

This immersive training with Arielle Schwartz introduces clinicians to natural Vagus Nerve and Polyvagal Practices for Trauma that require no specialized equipment. These practices include:

  • Breath-based regulation
  • Sound and vocalization
  • Eye movements
  • Self-applied touch where the vagus nerve is accessible
  • Gentle somatic movement

These approaches are practical, accessible, and adaptable for psychotherapy settings.

Understanding Autonomic Regulation and Vagal Tone

Healthy vagal tone reflects balance between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. This balance supports stress resilience, emotional regulation, and autonomic flexibility.

Low vagal tone is associated with heightened anxiety, fear, and irritability. Many clients benefit from parasympathetic regulation strategies. Others require interventions that support safe mobilization when fatigue or shutdown occurs.

This training provides neural exercises grounded in Vagus Nerve and Polyvagal Practices for Trauma. Clinicians learn how to tailor regulation strategies to diverse clinical presentations.

Clinical Application in Psychotherapy Practice

Grounded in polyvagal theory, affective neuroscience, and trauma-informed care, this course explores how the brain and body respond to stress. Participants deepen their understanding of neuroception and autonomic patterns.

Led by Dr. Arielle Schwartz, the training strengthens clinicians’ ability to:

  • Assess autonomic states in session
  • Recognize signals of safety and threat
  • Apply vagal-toning strategies moment-to-moment
  • Support co-regulation in the therapeutic relationship

Didactic teaching is integrated with experiential practice. Participants learn and rehearse evidence-based Vagus Nerve and Polyvagal Practices for Trauma that can be woven into existing modalities.

Integrating Vagus Nerve and Polyvagal Practices for Trauma Across Modalities

This workshop is designed for psychotherapists who want to expand their somatic and neurobiological knowledge. It supports competence in teaching clients self-regulation skills.

Participants explore:

  1. Positive neuroplasticity and resilience
  2. Heart rate variability (HRV) and vagal tone
  3. The vagal brake and vagal efficiency
  4. Grounding and orienting techniques
  5. Therapeutic yoga principles
  6. Compassion-based practices
  7. Reflex integration strategies

By the end of the week, clinicians will have a structured toolkit of Vagus Nerve and Polyvagal Practices for Trauma. These tools enhance therapeutic presence and clinical precision. They strengthen the ability to foster regulation, resilience, and agency within the therapeutic relationship.
